What is a continent?

A continent is a large land mass.

There are 7 continents: North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Antarctica, Australia, and Africa.

First, introduce one continent at a time by using a world map or globe.

Read a great book about the continent that you are focusing on.

Use the continent coloring pages to reinforce the shape and name of the continents.

Landforms, landmarks, and countries can also be introduced when teaching the continents.

Children should know the name of the continent and country they live on.

Use the coloring sheets to make a continent book.

Have your child write a sentence about the continent.

1. Use a globe or map to show them where each continent is located.

2. Talk about what makes each continent unique – its climate, landscape, people, animals etc.

3. Use visuals to help them remember – photos, illustrations, short videos.

4. Again, repetition is key – have them name the continents several times, in order and out of order.

5. Make it interactive – let them point to the continent on the map as you name it, or act out animals or activities associated with each continent.
